Founding a health insurance and Medicare Brokerage has been an incredible life changer.  Although many of my days are spent in the office, I knew I wanted to find a comfortable work-life balance and find time for road trips.  I feel blessed that I’ve been able to manage the company from the road.

This Summer, my wife Alexa and I took our dog Skid on the adventure of a lifetime.  I recently purchased a Dodge Sprinter Van and poured my heart into building a “home” from the interior of our new van.  We boldly packed ourselves into the Sand Van for an extended trip around the United States.

Living in the van was an incredible experience. Although it is tight quarters, we are very comfortable!  Our queen size bed fits all three of us… barely.  I am lucky to have had 2 great companions. Alexa has turned into an avid hiker. Her enthusiasm to see new things helps me get out of the bed in the morning.

Our Golden Retriever “Skid” was also a great adventurer. Watching him frolic gleefully is a real treat when your legs are tired of walking.  While on the road he can’t sleep; he stares out the window.  Still, he finds tons of energy while exploring.  At night, Skid crashes quickly so he can recover for the next adventure.

Our 50 day trip took the three of us from California through Las Vegas into Utah.  Utah surprised me.  I didn’t realize how much there was to explore. Utah would be a great place to spend a month in a van but we continued on to visit some friends in Aspen, Denver, and Boulder Colorado.  A bit of loneliness can set in after being on the road for a few weeks so it was a good opportunity to experience city life and hang with some good people.

From Colorado we traveled through Wyoming to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.  If you are thinking, “my goodness they are far away from home” then you are correct.  This was the halfway mark.  After driving long, long hours through Montana, we reached Lake Coeur d’Alene.  Alexa’s mom grew up in this area so we were able to reconnect with her and all of her high school girlfriends.

We then traveled through Washington and Oregon to reach our home state.  We did our most exhausting hike in Washington when we climbed Sunrise Mt Rainier.  After Portland we bolted West because we missed the ocean so much.  Alexa jumped into the freezing water the moment we got there.  Being back at the ocean felt like our long trip was coming to an end.

So how was it?  We cannot wait to do it again.  HealthyMarks was in good hands with my team here in San Diego and I was able to keep up with work they sent me from the office.  I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to see the world in this way.  I will see you on the next trip!
