CoveredCA has extended the deadline to enroll in a new plan

The Coronavirus has been devastating for our country and our entire world. CoveredCA has agreed to allow those who are not currently enrolled in an individual plan to enroll in one effective April 1st or May 1st. If you are worried about costs for your care due to a serious emergency like Coronavirus, I suggest you take this opportunity to evaluate whether you want to enroll now.

“Due to the circumstances associated with COVID-19, Covered California is expanding its Special Enrollment Period for 2020. Effective immediately, any eligible consumer can enroll in health coverage without experiencing a qualifying life event or other special circumstance. This new policy will be in effect until June 30, 2020.”

CoveredCA enrollment extension due to Coronavirus

This is a good follow up to a conversation I had last month with many people. A lot of my followers were concerned about the California Mandate for health insurance in 2020. If you do not have health insurance here in California, you will receive a fine during your 2020 tax season. However, if you enroll for a plan effective April 1st, you will have avoided the penalty by electing coverage for more 9 months in the year.

“Households could pay a flat fine — $695 for each uninsured adult and $347.50 for each child — or 2.5% of their income, whichever is higher. The penalties will be paid to the California Franchise Tax Board when 2020 taxes are paid in the year 2021.”
