Blue Shield makes working with them easy.

“It was a pleasure working with Alexa to guide me through the obstacles of signing up for Medicare. I had trepidation as my father had opted to never sign up. Alexa made the process easy and she was available to answer all my questions. Now that I am signed up with my supplemental plan, I am paying $2000 less per month on health insurance. As an extra service, Alexa laughed at my bad jokes.”

Plan G and “G Extra” or “G Innovative”

Blue Shield offers a handful of Supplement plans including plan A and Plan N.

Plan N is popular because it minimizes the out of pocket costs for members but has a $198 deductible for many of its services.

Plan G is where many members decide to go because it covers 100% of the costs for your services except has a $198 deductible for Medical expenses, blood drawing and testing, and any home healthcare expenses.

If you are turning 65 soon, I suggest you select the Plan G or Plan G Extra also known as Plan G Innovative.

What added benefits do you receive from Plan G Extra?

The plan G extra plan offers Teladoc services, over the counter items provided by CVS, and hearing aid benefits. With all Supplement plans you have foreign travel coverage.

Also with Supp plans from Blue Shield, you receive multiple savings by bundling your plans with dental and vision coverage. SilverSneakers is also included at no cost.

Plan F and Plan F Innovative

If you turned 65 before Jan 2020, but you haven’t done your initial enrollment on Medicare because you had coverage from your employer, you can get access to special Plan F plans.

These Plan F and Plan F Extra are better than what is available after Jan 2020 because these plans have been discontinued.

The major benefit plan F has that Plan G doesn’t is the $0 deductible on Medical Expenses, Blood drawing and testing, and Home Healthcare expenses. Plan G has a small $198 deductible for these services.

What added benefits do you receive from Plan F Extra?

The plan F extra plan offers Personal Emergency Response System (PERS), and hearing aid benefits. With all Supplement plans you have foreign travel coverage.

Also with Supp plans from Blue Shield, you receive multiple savings by bundling your plans with dental and vision coverage. SilverSneakers is also included at no cost.

Prescription Drug Coverage for Blue Shield Supplement Plans

As with all Supplement plans, you will need to enroll in a Part D Prescription Drug plan to complete your Medicare coverage.

Blue Shield offers 2 great Drug plans for you to choose from all within the same enrollment process.

Blue Shield Drug Plans: Rx Plus and Rx Enhanced

The first plan is called the “Rx Plus”. This plan is inexpensive but covers the costs for most generic and preferred drugs. You can be confident in this plan if you do not take many prescription drugs.

The other plan is called the “Rx Enhanced” plan. Although this plan’s premium is much more than the first plan, you will have access to a larger drug formulary (a formulary is a list of drugs Blue Shield will cover) and you will pay less out of your pocket for those drugs.

If you start on the Rx Plus, you can later in life upgrade to the Rx Enhanced if your drug needs change over the years.
